Connecticut Society of Genealogists

"A book about my family is a book about me."

Perhaps this statement, more than anything, explains the strong fascination we have with exploring our family history. It's something personal. A tantalizing mystery of our own forgotten past.
---Mostly names and dates. Maybe clues of where people lived, their occupations. If we're lucky, some faces rendered in black and white. Stoically rigid. Silent. Familiar perhaps?
---And yet we sense a debt of kinship that calls to remember. We find glimpses of the world they lived in. Harsher than ours. Perhaps more real? Like detectives enthralled by the search for evidence, we come to reclaim that world. It's no wonder that genealogy is the second most popular hobby in this nation.
---In East Hartford, we are fortunate to have the Connecticut Society of Genealogists based right in our midst. With 4,500 members worldwide, and a huge collection of materials, they can help you get started on discovering your family tree. Among the resources available you will find:

  • Family histories
  • General reference
  • Early census data
  • Town histories
  • The Barbour Collection
  • Early probate records in book form
  • The Mayflower books
  • Member contributed charts

---Some of these resources, such as member contributed charts, are not limited to Connecticut.
---The Society also publishes the bi-monthly CSG Newsletter, and a quarterly publication called the Connecticut Nutmeger.
---To promote high standards of excellence, the Society sponsors an Annual Awards Contest for New England genealogies, family histories, and a miscellaneous category.
